Elk Hunting

Montana 6x6 BullThere is almost no greater thrill then to have a 300 class bull come screaming into your calls on a cool September morning. Your heart will race, your senses will be enhanced, as the opportunity to take a trophy bull is about to occur. It is not uncommon for a archery hunters to have an opportunity for a shot almost daily while hunting the ranch. Shots range from 20-50 yards, preseason shooting in a must as even an experienced archery hunter can become nervous or excited as a bull elk comes into shooting range.

The hunting area has a convenient road system that allows the hunter and licensed guide to be dropped off on high ridges to hunt down toward the Yellowstone River each morning and afternoon. This road system allows hunters with limited hiking abilities to still experience Montana archery hunting at it’s best. Horses & Pack animals are often used to gain access into areas that are secluded, which exposes hunters to elk that have typically been unhunted for quit some time. These animals are also used to pack out elk when the terrain allows for it. Please keep in mind that while hunters may have multiple opportunities to take a bull any type of hunting is never guarantied.

Resident elk live on the ranch along with additional bulls that come down the valley from Yellowstone National Park. You will find the bull-cow ratio to be right around 20-35 bulls per 100 cows. Some of the techniques used by Nelson Story Archery Hunts to harvest trophy bulls are cow calling, bugling, spot and stock, wallows, tree stands and game trails.
